WASTE REMOVAL ADVICE

How to Check a Licensed Waste Carrier in England and Wales

Clear, practical guidance for customers arranging collection or clearance in England and Wales.

Why the carrier register matters

Whether you are booking a house clearance or arranging business waste collection, check the person taking the waste is authorised. An unusually cheap offer with no verifiable details can expose you to fly-tipping risk.

Where to verify registration

For England, use the Environment Agency public register. For Wales, use the Natural Resources Wales checking service. Search by registered business name or number, and check that the registration is valid and relevant to the service.

Upper tier and lower tier

Many businesses transporting other people’s household waste need upper-tier registration. Ask the carrier which registration tier applies. Do not assume a logo on a van or a screenshot is proof of a current registration.

Questions to ask before collection

Ask for the registered business name, waste carrier number, a written description of what will be collected, the disposal or recovery destination where appropriate, and the quoted total. Keep evidence of who collected your waste.
